In Your Pregnancy, AVOID Taking Vitamin-A Supplements On Your Own!

In your pregnancy, AVOID taking Vitamin-A supplements on your own!

If you are pregnant, and if you take excessive amount of vitamin-A

during the early months of your pregnancy,

it can cause serious birth defect in your unborn child.

There are two form of vitamin-A-

1)PROFORM=RETINOL [present in animal food]

2)PREFORM=CAROTENOIDS [present in plant food].

Requirement of vitamin-A is depending on your age and gender.

Daily requirement of vitamin-A for adult female from food is

1)Retinol=600 microgm or  2)Beta-carotene=2400 microgm.

But you should not take vitamin A supplement [tablets] without

your doctor’s advice as taking more than

10,000mcg of oral vitamin-A supplements for long term can

cause many side effects like-

  • Bone thinning
  • Liver damage
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Skin irritation
  • Pain in the bone and joints etc.

Vitamin -A is a fat soluble vitamin. This means that

it is stored in your body. Hence, when it is taken in

excess, it can be harmful to your body.

Don’t worry, Vitamin-A is safe to take during pregnancy and

breast feeding as long as you don’t take more than

recommended amount for your age and condition.

A healthy diet will provide you with enough vitamin-A.

You don’t need to take them from artificial sources like supplements.

Good natural vegetarian sources of vitamin-A are-

  • Carrot
  • Beet root
  • Green leafy vegetables

You should not take any supplement unless it is advised  by

your doctor or your dietitian!

That’s all for today.

See you next Tuesday

with another Tuesday tip.

Till than…..

Take care.
